Many popcorn is vegan, especially in Spain, where we are more oil, but there are also those that are made with butter. Similarly, making your own popcorn at home is always healthier because you know the ingredients you are using and can adapt the recipe to your liking.

To make popcorn you only need 3 ingredients: oil, corn and salt. We also like to add nutritional or brewer’s yeast and garlic powder because it makes them even tastier. If you don’t take oil, you can read an alternative in the recipe notes.



  • 2‚Äď4 cucharadas de aceite de coco, ver notas si no tomas aceite
  • 1/2 taza de ma√≠z para hacer palomitas (105 g)
  • 1/4 taza de levadura nutricional o de cerveza (4 cucharadas)
  • 2 cucharaditas de ajo en polvo
  • 1‚Äď2 cucharaditas de sal


  1. Pour the oil into a pot with a lid , better if the lid is transparent. We add 2 tablespoons, but if you add more, they will have more flavor and the yeast, garlic powder and salt will stick better. Heat the oil with the lid on over medium-high heat.
  2. Add 3-4 kernels of corn, replace the lid, and when they pop and turn into popcorn pour in the rest. Ideally, give the pot a little shake from time to time to prevent sticking.
  3. When the grains stop popping, turn off the heat , add the rest of the ingredients and shake the pot well so that the popcorn is well impregnated. Even so, it is normal that part of the yeast, the garlic powder and the salt fall to the bottom and do not impregnate 100% well. You can also remove them with the help of a spatula in addition to shaking the pot so that they are better impregnated.
  4. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for about 5- 7 days.


  • In the past I have tried popping oil-free popcorn in a pot and it worked for me, although you have to be very careful not to stick it. As they do not have oil, I do not know if the rest of the ingredients will adhere well, since when I have cooked them without oil I have only added salt. One option would be to wet them a bit with water before adding the rest of the ingredients.
  • You can use any type of oil you like.
  • Yeast and garlic powder are not essential ingredients, you can eliminate them or add other ingredients that you like.
