Vegan substitutes are not exactly cheap, so the ideal is to make them at home, in addition, they are usually healthier and we know what we are eating. These types of foods are not to be eaten often, but to treat ourselves from time to time. Many people make the mistake of trying to eat the same as when it was not vegan but in a 100% vegetable version and if normal bacon is not a healthy food, the vegan version is not either (although it is 1,000 times healthier and lighter).

I had seen several substitutes for bacon, some based on coconut, vegetables or soy, but the one with tempeh was the one that caught my attention the most and the truth is that the flavor is quite successful.

Ingredientes

  • 250 g tempeh (8 oz)
  • 1 cuharada de tamari o salsa de soja
  • 1 cucharada de aceite de oliva virgen extra + aceite extra para freír el bacon
  • 1 cucharada de sirope de arce o agave
  • 1/2 cucharadita de salsa picante o 1/2 cucharadita de pimentón dulce
  • 2 cucharaditas de aroma de humo (líquido o en polvo), opcional
  • 1/2 cucharadita de comino en polvo
  • Pimienta negra y sal al gusto

Instructions

  1. Slice the tempeh as thinly as possible as you can without breaking them.
  2. In a bowl, mix all the ingredients except the salt. Add the tempeh slices and macerate them for 1 or 2 minutes so that they are well impregnated.
  3. In a frying pan, add a splash of extra virgin olive oil and when it is very hot add the tempeh strips. Let them brown on both sides and remove them to a plate with kitchen paper to absorb excess oil. Sprinkle salt on top to taste.
  4. You can eat the bacon fresh or cold.
