It’s Thanksgiving soon and I wanted to make some typical recipe. Taking advantage of the fact that sweet potatoes are in season, I finally decided on this sweet potato casserole, which is a delicious side dish, especially if you like it sweet.

The contrast between the sweetness of the sweet potato, the maple syrup and the caramelized pecans is spectacular. The texture is also amazing, as the mashed sweet potato is very smooth, while the walnuts give it an interesting crunch.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200ºC or 400ºF for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Wash, cut the sweet potatoes in half and prick them with a knife so they don’t burst. Bake for about 20-30 minutes or until tender. The time may vary depending on the oven and how big they are.
  3. Peel the sweet potatoes and put the meat in a bowl together with the rest of the ingredients (milk, syrup, oil, salt, pepper and cinnamon). Beat with a hand blender or mash with the help of a press potatoes or with a fork until mashed.
  4. Pour the puree into a baking dish. I used a 9 1/4 x 6 x 2 inch (23 x 15 x 5 cm) rectangular one, though you can have other shapes or measurements.
  5. To make the pecans on top, just mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until well combined.
  6. Add to mashed sweet potato and bake at 350ºF/180ºC for about 30 minutes or until both mashed and pecans are golden brown.
  7. Remove from oven and serve immediately.
  8. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge during for 4-5 days.

  • Maple syrup can be substituted for any other liquid sweetener.
  • Instead of pecans, you can use regular walnuts.
