Potato pie and vegetable meat

Very good! Today it’s time for an easy recipe but very handy. I am talking about this potato and vegetable meat cake, which can be prepared with ingredients that you will find in practically any supermarket. When I say «vegetable meat» I mean that instead of using animal meat we will use textured soy, and thus we have a version of the classic potato and meat cake, but adapted to a vegan version 🙂

As it does not require kneading and you do not have to prepare homemade dough, the preparation of this cake is very easy, fast and suitable for beginner cooks. You don’t have to have great knowledge, nor will you need products that are too rare. In addition, baking is also very simple because we will only use it to brown the cake a little.


3 large potatoes

300 ml of tomato sauce


1 bowl of thick textured soybeans

4 mushrooms

1 onion

Garlic powder

Sweet paprika

Chopped parsley


Olive oil

Optional: 2 handfuls nutritional yeast

*We will need a baking pan

Step by step

  1. We start by hydrating the thick soybeans in hot water. And meanwhile, we peel and cook the potatoes cut into large cubes.

  2. On the other hand, cut the 4 mushrooms into slices and chop the onion.
  3. Sauté it in a pan with a drizzle of olive oil, until lightly browned .
  4. Next, remove the soybeans from the water and place them in the pan. Saute for 5 minutes, adding another splash of olive oil to grease.
  5. Next, add garlic powder, sweet paprika, parsley and a pinch of salt.
  6. Add generous sauce of tomato, until covering all the sautéed, about 250-300 ml.
  7. Mix well and add 1/4 cup of water. Stir again and leave on low heat for a few minutes.

  8. At this point, the potatoes will be cooked. So we transfer them to a bowl and add (optionally) 2 handfuls of nutritional yeast and cover up to a little more than 1/3 of the height of the potatoes with water.
  9. We also add a pinch of salt Add the potatoes and mash until you get a creamy puree without lumps.
  10. Now, grease the mold (base and sides) with olive oil and preheat the oven to 180 degrees. You can use a springform pan if you don’t have much cooking experience.
  11. Assemble the potato cake by first making a potato base (adjust it well to the mold with a spoon or spatula, so there are no gaps) and then another vegetable meat base.
  12. Repeat the process until finishing with all the filling, always being the first and last layer the potato.
  13. Now, we put it in the oven for about 25 minutes at 180 degrees, on top and bottom, until golden brown.
  14. Remove it, unmold and serve hot.
